Nozzle Check showing gaps in the Cyan and Vivid Magenta Channels – Epson P 9890on: November 7, 2023 at 2:29 pm
Thanks to both of you for your comments and suggestions. I have also found that Mark Segal’s advice works. Looking forward to his review of the new Epson P 5370.
Re: Epson PrintersReply #1 on: November 6, 2023 at 3:17 pmA friend has an Epson 9890 which had not been used for about 6 months. I tried a nozzle check and after a couple of power cleans it is printing on all channels except cyan and vivid magenta. The printer does not do any further nozzle checks saying that these two nozzles are blocked. There is no ink coming through the cyan channel and the vivid magenta has about 85% of the pattern printed. The printer is a behemoth and is difficult to transport to any of the Epson repair locations.
Any suggestions on things to do to unclog these two channels? Any suggestions and detailed instructions on what to do will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Epson PrintersReply #2 on: January 20, 2022 at 11:52 amI hope to learn from the responses to the post. Epson for instance offers both Dye Sublimation Printers and Surecolor Photo series of printers. Most digital images, especially when advanced amateurs or professionals print their images themselves, seem to be printed on the Surecolor Photo series (such as 3880, P 900, P 5000 etc.) using RGB. However, commercial printers seem to use dye subs in the CMYK color space. I realize that the inks are different but the questions I have (and want to remove the confusion) are:
1. Is the identification of RGB with Photo Series (self-printing) and CMYK with Dye sub (commercial) a hard and fast rule (does pigment vs dye play a role)?
2. If I am not printing on transfer paper for using on metal, glass etc. but a photographic print, can I use the same paper I use on a 3880 (e.g. Luster or Hot Press Bright) on a Epson Dye Sub printer? Are icc profiles available for popular Epson papers used for RGB printers for printing on Epson Dye Sub printers? Or are the papers for image on paper very different in the two cases?
3. Is the print quality and resolution and print permanance comparable using the two methods? Or is cost the issue?
4. If the two methods give comparable prints at comparable cost, why isn’t more self printing done on Dye Sub printers? Is it a marketing push for the printer manufacturers that they make more money selling pigment based ink ink?
I am more than a bit muddled in trying to reconcile the differences but hopefully I can get a clearer picture after I read the responses.
Thanks.
Re: Loading Epson DriversReply #3 on: November 14, 2021 at 5:48 pmMark and Andrew:
Your suggestions worked. I went to the Epson site and found the following and followed the instructions and success! Andrew good to know my trusty 3880 (circa 2012) will work with Monterey. Thanks and good wishes.

- The Apple AirPrint driver may have been configured as your default printer driver. To use the Epson software again, delete your printer’s print queue on your Mac, and then reinstall the Epson software. Do the following:
- Select the
menu > System Preferences, then click Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer, then click
to remove the printer queue.
- Go to the Epson Support page and search for your product.
- Select macOS 11 in the Operating System drop-down box, if necessary.
- Do one of the following:
- Download and install the Drivers and Utilities Combo Package for your product.
- If a Drivers and Utilities Combo Package is not available for your product, download and install the software in the Recommended For You section.
If you cannot use the Epson software after following the steps above, contact Epson Support.

Re: Epson PrintersReply #4 on: November 14, 2021 at 5:16 pmI have a Epson 3880 printer. I recently upgraded my iMac (late 2019) to Mac OS Big Sur (OS 11.6.1) to enable me to use the latest version of Photoshop and Camera Raw with advanced masking capabilities . When I tried to print, all the Epson ICC profiles for my printer had disappeared from the new files. When I went to the Epson site, they do not have the ICC Profiles for Big Sur – Mac OS 12. The last OS for which Epson has ICC profiles is 10.15.x. Can I download these profiles and use them with Big Sur and profile the prints using these profiles?
Without manually profiling each paper, is there any other way than the above.
Thanks.
