The Daily Chat – Argus C3 – My First

My Very First Camera

My first camera ever, The Argus C3

We all remember our firsts.  It’s hard to believe that in the late sixties, my life changed after purchasing the Argus C3 camera.  It wasn’t all that expensive, and I used money from my allowance and odd jobs to buy this camera.  I had read all about it in Popular Photography and Modern Photography.  Those were two very popular and relatively thick magazines from the time.  Half the magazines were ads for cameras.  I don’t even think B&H was around back then.  Do any of you remember Spiratone?

Nevertheless, everywhere I looked, I would see the Argus C3.  It was pretty modern-looking and was very simple to operate.  It was introduced in 1939 and was discontinued in 1966.  It had a good run as far as cameras go.  It was American-made and around the mid-sixties Japanese cameras invaded the marketplace and the C3 was discontinued.  This camera served me well until my parents, seeing my growing interest in photography, gifted me a Mamiya Sekor 500DTL around 1969.  While the Argus C3 cemented my interest in photography, the Mamiya pushed it forward to an unstoppable passion for photography that has continued to this day.

Photography is my passion and has been for 50 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of picture taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can, hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through, this site, as well as Rockhopper Workshops, and other projects, as well as teaching as Artist In Residence at the Indianapolis Art Center.
