DPReview Is Shutting Down

It’s A Sad Day

The photography industry sure is changing. This morning, most likely, you found a message announcing the closing of the #1 photography website, DPReivew.  This is a surprise and very sad.  DPreview is owned by Amazon and they have laid off 19,000 people recently and closed parts of their business. Unfortunately, DPReview is one of them.

I go way back with DPreview to the days when Phil Askey owned the site. It was big news when Amazon bought it for an outrageous amount of money.   The site grew and had some great writers, and of course, Chris and Jordan, who did their videos.  These guys are my friends, and I feel sorry they are going to be out of jobs. We all would meet at press junkets and got to be friends, especially so before the pandemic.

The Announcement

Going Forward

DPReview will continue until April 10th and then be static and eventually be turned off.  I am pretty sure Chris and Jordan will continue with their videos and many of the writers will find new homes.  I’m going to be working on stepping up what we offer here at PhotoPXL.  I’m a one-man show, and I also do workshops and such.  I want to get to a point where we offer an article every couple of days, if not every day.  I’ll be reaching out to more writers and contributors.  Without DPReview, I’ll get back into doing more camera, lens, and product reviews.  I shied away from those as there were so many people doing them, but I believe I can offer a different kind of perspective.

If you are a writer for DPReview or just a reader and would like to do articles, please get in touch with me.  My goal is to make PhotoPXL a great photography community and help our readers enjoy photography more.

I am talking to a number of folks and hoping we can up the ante over the coming months.  Please feel free to reach out to me if you’d like to be a part of this.  We are living in a changing world and we need to reinvent the way we do things continually.

Photography is my passion and has been for 50 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of picture taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can, hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through photoPXL.com, this site, as well as Rockhopper Workshops, and other projects, as well as teaching as Artist In Residence at the Indianapolis Art Center.
