Yes, Russ, but I liked the contrail.  I have other shots without it.

El Capitan looks particularly imposing in your rendering.  Excellent.

Thanks Paul.  When I saw your version of El Capitan it reminded me of that trip.  I was particularly attuned to El Capitan because my nephew was working in Yosemite as a volunteer the previous summer.  He was climbing El Capitan (with ropes) with a friend when he accidentally dropped his pack, which fell 600 feet.  He lost his food/water/shirt and non-climbing shoes, but decided to continue to the top.  Had to hike back to the valley in his climbing shoes and got a sunburn on the way.  While I have hiked and backpacked for decades, that photo is the closest I will get to climbing El Capitan.

Do you store your camera in the freezer? 😉

Russ, we will have to agree to disagree.  I’m going to stick with the scientists.

Windmills are much better than coal which has caused/contributed to many deaths due to the nasty pollutants, even if you don’t care about global warming:

I enjoyed the article very much.  Unfortunately, the app is only available for iphone.  No android version available.

Testing further with A7r2 it looks like the first point where I see the zebras is actually the point where there is no over exposure.  An over exposure was shown in Fastrawviewer, but Rawdigger doesn’t find the overexposure.  If I decrease exposure compensation by 1/3 stop from there I have about 1/3 stop of headroom in Rawdigger before clipping.  Note that I am using “Full Well Limited Camera” in the preferences setting for over exposure.  I don’t know if that is the optimal setting.

For Sony mirrorless cameras the zebras are taken from the RAW data.  I set Zebras to 100+ on my Sony A7R2 and compared the presence of zebras to the RAW data using Fastrawviewer/Rawdigger.  The match is perfect.  I photograph in Aperture mode and use exposure compensation until I see the zebras then back off 1/3 stop. For newer Sony cameras you can set the lower limit to 109+ as detailed in this video by Mark Galer (starting around 6:30 in the video):

Zebra 109+ for Sony Raw Photographers

The TruDOF-Pro mentioned by Jim Kasson only works on Apple devices.  For those on Android I found a substitute:

DOF by Jonathan Sachs.  There is also a Windows version on his website.
