    Oh yeah, that’s West Texas. I went through advanced pilot training at Big Spring, Texas in 1952, Paul. I also made occasional photo shooting trips through the area from Colorado Springs later in life. Regarding Big Spring, as a friend once said: “If it grows it’ll stick ya; if it crawls it’ll bite ya; if it flies it’ll sting ya.” That’s West Texas.

    So true. One of my favorite moments during my medical career was when a young man came in with an unusual complaint. He said for six months, whenever he touched a specific spot on his leg, it sent an electric shock down his leg. Asked him what he’d been doing six months earlier and he said camping in the Big Bend. I told him he probably had a thorn broken off in his leg and that every time he touches that spot, the thorn stabs a nerve. Sent him to a surgeon and that’s exactly what they found.
