Check out the newest article on EPSON printers HERE.  Start a discussion.  I can’t wait to get my hands on these the p700 for home and the P900 to replace my P800.

I received my Epson P900 yesterday from B&H Photo. I ordered the unit in April, so I was glad to finally receive it.

After unboxing, installing the ink cartridges and printer driver, I made my first print. This all took only about 15 minutes. The first print on Epson Luster paper was perfect. No need to run head alignment or cleaning. The second print of the same image was immediately made on Epson Enhanced Matte paper. The new feature of being able to print photo black or matte black ink without expensive and time consuming ink switching is worth the upgrade alone.

With my previous printer, the Epson P800, I avoided printing matte papers because of the ink switching issue. No more is this a concern! I have stock of various premium matte papers from Epson and Hahnemuehler that I can use without reservation.

The other benefit of the new printer is the fact that it has a footprint that is about 30% smaller than the P800. It is also much quieter and the internal LED lighting system allows you to see the printhead lay down ink on the paper, a great feature.

Contrary to what has been published, the ink cartridges supplied with the printer and only about 1/3 capacity as measured by the printer ink utility. I did buy a set of replacement ink cartridges because I plan on printing a lot of images to compare the print quality to similar prints made with my old P800.

I’m very excited about the new P900. So far, so good!

Good to hear Bud.  PXL got the P900 yesterday, too, and Mark is already hard at work on his review.  In my tests, I haven’t seen any noticeable difference between the new printers and the P800.   The new features (Matte and PL ) switching is worth the price of admission.  The ability to print wireless from mobile devices and the simplicity of using the Epson Print layout are great differentials.  I love the new LCD Panel and the cool light inside.  Smaller footprints sizes are good too.  I am printing something almost every day and loving it.

    Kevin,

After a few days with my new P900, I definitely agree with your comment that the new LCD screen is way better than that on the P800.

As far as IQ, I compared prints made on the P900 at maximum quality with overcoating to the same prints made on my old P800. There is a noticeable improvement, particularly with shadow and blacks but it depends on the image. B&W printed on matte paper is an improvement too.

Generally, loving it! Well worth the upgrade.

    Kevin,

Do you have an estimate on when your article on Epson Print Layout software will be available? I am particularly interested in printing from the iOS software and the best way to use and ICC profile when printing from iOS using a non-Epson paper.

    Thanks,

    Mickey

    Mickey,

You might want to check out the few excellent Epson videos on Youtube about the print layout software.

I hope to try and get the videos started this week.  Then I’ll turn them over to Michael for editing.

Bud, you referred to cartridge capacity being about 1/3.  Are you referring to ink remaining after setup or the initial shipped volume?  Thanks.

I noticed the levels after the set up but before I made my first print.
