Interesting. Can you explain what we’re looking at here?

It’s a bookcase in Chetham’s Library, the oldest public library in Britain. The books, which are unusual for the time in that they are in English, were chained so they couldn’t be taken away. It’s a fine building in the centre of Manchester. My camera club booked a morning there, which was enjoyable. The premises are now a music boarding school. My old school, Manchester Grammar, occupied premises next door from its foundation in 1515 until 1931, when it moved to very much larger grounds a couple of miles south.

There’s more information about Humphrey Chetham and the buildings here.

There’s a bust of Chetham on the wall of the baronial hall, which is now used for concerts.

There would be worse places to go to school, I imagine.

The stools, with the inset “S”, are more than 350 years old.

I suspect the kids use more modern books.

Fascinating stuff, Jeremy. Thanks for taking the trouble to explain it all.
