    Winter is Icumin InWinter-is-Icumin-In

If you’re not familiar with this title, Google “Summer is icumin in.” It’s an old English poem, almost unintelligible unless you have a translation. Ezra Pound also did a pretty disgusting takeoff on it.

I rather like the Pound version. It has a lack of respect for the antiquity of the original that I find refreshing.

    Hi Jeremy,

Well, I used to irritate my grandmother by reading aloud Pound’s “Winter is Icumin in.”

When I was at University of Michigan in 1950 I suddenly discovered what poetry really was all abut thanks to Eliot and Pound. In one class we were required to write a poem. I turned in several. The professor read “Metamorphosis” to the class. Suddenly, a bunch of girls were interested in me, an extraordinary situation of which I wasn’t prepared to take advantage since I was broke and a loner. I continued to write poetry, sent a bunch of it to “little” magazines, and was published fairly regularly. I still write poetry occasionally.
