Since I’m primarily a landscape photographer, and the prices have fallen sharply on the grey market, I recently decided to purchase a 5Ds. I know so many people have moved to Sony. Anyone still with the 5Ds and what has been your experiences?
Thanks

Re: Canon 5Ds – anyone still shooting with it?Reply #2 on: October 4, 2020 at 6:13 pmI’m still using mine, and have been for coming up to five years now. It’s a fine camera for landscape, with excellent resolution. Its low light capabilities are limited and I found its deficiencies for wildlife cruelly exposed in Japan last year: the autofocus just couldn’t keep up. It’s for that reason (and Kevin’s nagging at me – hi Kevin!) that I’ll be changing to a Sony system soon, probably in the New Year.

Re: Canon 5Ds – anyone still shooting with it?Reply #4 on: October 4, 2020 at 9:53 pmYes, tech has moved ahead in some areas. I was concerned about the weight of a full size DSLR with an L lens. But it’s not an issue for me. I love the photos I’m getting with it, using the 24-105 L 11 lens.
If funds were not a limiting factor I probably would have tried the Sony. The deals out there now are amazing, new in the box for the price of an entry level FF. I think I made a good decision.

Re: Canon 5Ds – anyone still shooting with it?Reply #5 on: October 4, 2020 at 10:24 pmI have a Sony A7r II which I prefer for landscape use due to the dynamic range, no mirror slap to worry about when used handheld or on a tripod. So far all of my lenses are Canon lenses used with a metabones adapter. Also have a Canon 5DSr which I use for wildlife photography with Canon 100-400 mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II; I prefer to see the animal through optical view finder. Of course, if I had Sony A7r IV I might change my mind. Both cameras are great because the amount of cropping one can do and still get an image with a usable number of megapixels. I got one shot of a heron fishing and caught the heron with mouth open and fish suspended in mid-air between open beak. Even though I was at 400 mm on the 5DSr I had to crop the image from 50 MP to 5 MP because I couldn’t get close enough.
Re: Canon 5Ds – anyone still shooting with it?Reply #6 on: November 7, 2020 at 11:08 amSony does not make a camera with an optical finder. That is the killer for some of us.

Re: Canon 5Ds – anyone still shooting with it?Reply #7 on: January 12, 2021 at 8:07 amYes, still using my 5DsR for more than 5 years now. For landscape it’s still the highest resolution Canon, and I love mine.
