    Epson SC-P900 colors inaccurate
    on: January 7, 2024 at 11:25 am

@Jarred : Hi, did you see my earlier post in Nov last year (in this thread)?

Have you had any Epson printers before you bought the P900 (you most likely did)?

When I bought my P900 a couple of years ago I was chasing my tail just like you, and nothing seemed to work. Using the same setup as with my previous 3880 which worked fine, the P900 came out with dull prints (slightly dark and low contrast) as well as a slight color shift. Different papers, photo softwares, profiles etc. Driving me absolutely crazy and noone had any helpful ideas.

It sat idle in its box until I convinced myself to give it one more chance before I dumped it in the trash, this time with a new MacBook which had NOT had any Epson drivers installed previously. Made a few head cleaning runs etc since it had been sitting for so long, and then…. first print came out looking great on Epson swim-gloss paper with the Epson profile!

If I were you my next test would be to install the Epson drivers on *any* computer you may have which hasn’t had them before and print. If you have an iPhone you can do it from the excellent app Epson Print Layout which allows you to use Epson ICC profiles under Color Settings… see attached.

    Thanks Andrew,

that was what I was expecting too, but something was really off with my previous MacBook. It was used only for photography using CaptureOne and my Epson 3880, and all I did was to also install the P900 drivers and corresponding ICCs. Since I tried it with different imaging softwares, different papers and ICCs I concluded that something else was at play. On the new MacBook it just worked at once. I guess I will never know what the problem was but it was driving me crazy.

    Cheers,

    Henrik

    Hi,

I may have some good news if you are struggling with your P900 like I was.

For what it’s worth, I purchased a P900 a couple of years ago to replace my 3880 which gave up in the middle of a print.

The 3880 was always bang on, beautiful prints. The P900 not so much – after installing the P900 and making some test prints they came out a bit dark, lower contrast and with a slight color cast in green-yellow-brownish. I tested multiple papers from various vendors (Epson, Hahnemule, Canson etc) with their corresponding ICC files from the vendors. I also printed from various softwares including Capture One (my preferred sw), Adobe RAW, Lightroom, Photoshop, Epsons own software. All had the same issues being dull and lifeless with the same color cast, both in color prints and B/W. I was using a hardware calibrated Eizo screen.

The printer was duly parked in a corner in a spare room and I was contemplating to ditch it on the local scrap heap.

Last month I decided to give it a last chance before sending it off to the printer heaven. In doing so I reinstalled all my software on a new MacBook Pro 16 and lo and behold, the test prints came out perfect! My entire procedure and softwares were the same, the ICCs the same, the papers the same, same monitor.

Which leads me to conclude that either A) there has been a bug in MacOS related to color management or B) that there were some leftovers from the 3880 installation on the old MacBook which somehow interfered with the 900 installation…  So if you have the same issue, a total reinstall of your computer (incl OS) might do the trick.

Anyway, now a happy user and a P900 saved 🙂

Let me know if you want more details on versions etc.
