The Indianapolis Art Center
The Indianapolis Art Center

As many of you know, I was honored to be named an Artist In Residence at the Indianapolis Art Center in Indianapolis, IN.  I have been holding my Fine  Art Printing Workshops there this past year.  They have been quite successful and a lot of fun.

I am now happy to announce that during the next two semesters, I’ll be teaching two classes at the Art Center every week.

For many years now, teaching has been something I enjoy the most.  I have had a great career in photography, and with all the knowledge I have gained along the way, I enjoy paying it back.  With my Rockhopper Workshops travel workshops and the photoPXL website, I try to share as much knowledge as possible so those passionate about photography can learn how to take better images and enjoy photography at a different level.

I am happy to announce that I will teach two courses starting in January.  I’m quite excited about this opportunity.  I hope you’ll consider these two courses if you live in the Indianapolis area.

Digital Printing Made Easy

I am all about the print.  I don’t believe you have completed the photographic process until you can hold a print in your hands.  This course will help you achieve this.  It’s not as hard as it looks.

We will explore the different printers, software, papers, and special projects that can be accomplished by printing your work.  You’ll be printing each week and will learn along the way how to achieve the perfect print.  Each student will print at least one 30×44 inch print during the class.  All prints made are the student’s property and can be taken home.

To learn more about this course and to sign up, please CLICK HERE.  The tuition for the course is $369.00 and runs from Jan. 17 2024 – February 28, 2024, on  Wednesday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 PM.  I hope you can join me.

Here’s a bit more of what will be covered . . .

Digital Printing For Photographers

You don’t have a photograph until you can hold it in your hands.  So, often today, photographers load their pictures to mobile devices and share them on social media and never have a chance to see their photographs the way they were meant to be seen – on a print you can hold.

In this class, we cover all aspects of printmaking.  The Art Center is fortunate enough to have 4 of the latest large-format prints and various software programs to drive the. You’ll learn the basics of printing and printers and cover the steps to achieve great prints every time.  Trust me, it’s a lot easier than you may be aware of.  These are just a few things that will be covered.

  • Types and makes of printers
  • What’s a good printer for a home
  • Monitor calibration – the key to good images
  • Basic color management (don’t let the words scare you)
  • Soft proofing and hard proofing
  • Achieving great prints
  • Paper surfaces and how they can make a difference
  • We will make small prints and big prints as wide as 44 inches.  All prints are yours to keep.
  • Projects – a collection of prints that tell a story and how to present them
  • Wall Prints – You can frame and hang on your walls

This will be a fun, hands-on course.  Printing can be really easy, and it can easily be done as you will witness right from your mobile devices with the right printers and software.  By the end of the class, you will have a pile of prints that you have made and also a project or body of work.

A mobile phone and a  laptop with Lightroom and Photoshop will be needed for editing and prepping images to be printed.  Other software will be demonstrated, and you may want to consider purchasing some that are free.  Fast-paced and fun, you may find printing your photographs as addictive as taking them.

And That’s Not All

I will also be teaching a Mobile Phone Photography course.  I’m very excited about this one.  All of us these days have a camera in our pocket that happens to have a phone attached to it.  The capabilities of these phones have come a long way in the last few years, and the promise of these phones in the future is even greater.

This course will be jam-packed and cover many topics regarding taking better photos with your phone.  We will explore the basic settings and capabilities of the phones as well as apps and techniques to make better images.  You may be surprised as this may be the only camera you need.

This course will be held on Saturday mornings 9 AM – 12 Noon, starting on January 20, 2024, and run through March 2nd, 2024.  You’ll be doing assignments and projects that will be fun.  Before that class is complete, I’ll even show you how to make prints from your phone and demo for you just how large you can make your images.

More information and registration information can be found by CLICKING HERE.  The tuition for this class is $369.00, and you can register today.

Mobile Photo Photography

Mobile phones are no longer phones but cameras with phones.  These devices are capable of producing beautiful images.  In this course, we will explore and go through your phone’s settings to maximize image quality, file organization, and the usual necessities.  We will then dive down deep into using different lenses and settings to maximize your image experience.  We will explore third-party apps and how they can take your images further.  Then, we will explore how to make adjustments to your images in a number of different programs.  We will do field sessions and assignments under different lighting conditions.  Finally, we will examine exporting your images to social media and making prints. Everyone will be working with printers to learn how printing from mobile devices is so simple.  We will even make large 40-plus inch prints to show these devices’ capabilities.  All prints made are for you to keep.

This will be a fun journey, and you will be amazed at how capable these devices are for almost any type of photography you want.

•   Learn the hidden and regular camera settings that will make photographing easier

•   Learn what third-party apps are ones you should add to your workflow

•   Learn to shoot better images by assignments, real-time shooting, and critiques

•   Learn how to export, share on social media, and print your images

•   Learn Cloud backup strategies so your photos are never lost

The only thing you need is a SmartPhone ( A suggested apps list will be provided at the start of class)

The classroom is set up so you can see what the instructor is doing on a large monitor making it easier to follow the lessons.
