Removing curl memory after printing from rolls
    on: August 17, 2023 at 3:39 pm

My fake “D-roller”, which does the job just as well as the real thing, cost me about 10 bucks. I’ll share the “patent” right here and now: take a spool from a finished roll of roll paper that has the width of the printer carriage (e.g. 17″) and attach to it a piece of opaque mylar sheeting about two feet long by 17″ wide, using masking tape, and make sure it is straight so that when it is rolled-up it will not skew to either side. Have on hand two pieces of two-sided velcro tape. To use: place the media, coated side, against the mylar so that when rolled-up it will curl in the opposite direction of the curl to be eliminated, and roll it up in the mylar, then hold the bundle in place with the velcro strips, one near each end. Let sit for about a minute or less. Unroll, and bingo, the paper will feed through the printer without issues just fine.

    Hi Mark,

I think the original post from Richard Hass was talking about prints whereas you are discussing paper that is to be printed on.  Have you had any experience with your DIY D-Roller on actual prints?  When I cut paper from rolls (my Canon Pro-1000 does not accept roll paper), I use your technique but with a four inch diameter mailing tube.  Paper coming out of this is flat and I have no issues with curling.

Kudos to Mark for his well done review of the two Moab papers.  I have been printing on the natural paper for some years now and find it quite versatile.  I continue to be confused about the utility of M3 measurements for profiling.  There was a rather exhaustive debate over on LuLa just before I left with lots of people weighing in pro and con.  I don’t have an instrument capable of making M3 measurements so this ends up being academic and of course I rely on test prints along with spectro data to make sure that my profiles (all made with Argyll CMS) are satisfactory.  It also instructive that the original ink setting was unsatisfactory and Velvet Fine Art provided better results.  I remember Scott Martin covering this on his website some years ago and providing guidance and a test print to evaluate which setting might be best.

    Kevin,
Let me know how it turns out. I would certainly want to purchase some. Since we moved into a condo, I really don’t have room for lots of DIY projects so making them by hand is not in the cards. I have two folios left but those will be used up in the next couple of weeks.

I’m wondering if anyone knows about the availability of 8 print (letter size) folios for presentation gifts. I have used Dane Creek Folios (I think Michael Reichman wrote about them many years ago over on LuLa) in the past but it appears that they are no longer around. Lots of photographers used their easy to put together folio. I’ve tried using Google to find a comparable item but pretty much come up empty even using a number of different search terms. I hope that one of the members here can help out.

EDIT: After I posted this, I heard back from Neil Enns. He sold the last of the folios in 2022 and is not producing any more.

Re: Calibrite Colorchecker with Spectraview II; is it compatible?

No need to respond.  I just received a Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro and it runs just fine with Spectraview II.  Got a nice monitor profile and have tossed out the old NEC puck which no longer provides accurate reads.
