    DPReview Refugee thread….

Jim, Yes, I think for the past 3 years of shooting GFX with all of the lenses a lot I tend to be too paranoid about DOF and I often shoot to small an aperture. I think I could back off a stop or two almost every time and shoot more at the sweet spot of the lens. But in this case, that long pipeline was just crawling all the way under my feet, so I spun the lens dial to F10 and said to heck with it…. I’m shooting this at F10.

But I get your point and you are right.

I was skimming Jim’s thread on diffraction, DOF and res and it made me think of the shot I took yesterday on a cold windy beach on Long Island – the barrier island of Fire Island. The Corps of Engineers is doing some kind of sand reclamation project and there is a big pipeline running for miles along the beach. I’m not sure what this pipeline is though. It’s not oil or gas, so it must be moving wet sand. Not sure…. I was alone and there was no one to ask.

Without doing any DOF calculations I just shot at F10, knowing there would be some diffraction and wanting as much in focus at my feet on out as possible. Probably could have shot fine at F8, but that would have caused some blur close-in, but I just shot it at F10 because I felt like it.

I’m not sure how big a file I can attach here, so I’ll just link to the 50 MB full-size jpeg exported from LR from my laptop. I love the 20-35. It has not been off of my camera on this whole trip.

Hey Rand!  Can I post here?  I’ve been off DPR for 18 months and was very sad to see it shutting down.

I was emailing Jim today and heard about this site.

I’ve been shooting my GFX gear like a madman since I left DPR.

I love that 20-35.  Shot is a lot the past 3 days.  G0t it a couple of weeks ago.

How you doing?  I miss you guys.
