    Fulltone (offset) book printing technique
    on: March 4, 2021 at 4:50 pm

I’ll admit to not knowing what fulltone printing is, but if we’re tossing out printers I’ll add one more to the list. Friesens Corporation is a 114-yr-old, employee-owned company based on Amish values and sustainability principles, located in southern Manitoba. We worked with them to produce Marcia’s first children’s book (The Adventures of Rainbow Mouse) and our friend Dion used them to print his coffee table book Prairie Sunset, which is a book of photographs and history of old homesteads across the Canadian prairies. NB: In the past number of years they’ve gotten huge; I don’t know how that affects prices, but at certain times of the year they can get backlogged. https://www.friesens.com/

P.S. They also have a division – FriesenPress – that supports independent authors with book editing, page layout, cover design, etc. https://www.friesenpress.com/

You’re most welcome! One of the team members is a retired professor from UVic; I’ve been lucky to have been at two of her presentations.

Back to Harvey’s post, two things that might interest people…

    1) I downloaded a trial version of PTGui v.12 Beta yesterday. So far I’m very impressed with it. You can see from the exposure map how it’s extrapolating from each of the blended images. I tried it quickly with one HDR image and the result was quite noisy, but it wasn’t the best image.

    PTGui

    2) I stumbled across a (fulfilled) Kickstarter campaign today for a motorized camera tripod head. Does everything but make soup, including star tracking, focus stacking, multi-row panoramas… iOS or Android-based. They’re at $2.6M of $32K. Looks to be partly supported by Benro. The FAQ answers a lot of questions. No experience with it, but it looks like they’ll be competing with Gigapan.

    Re: Avalanche Library Converter
    Reply #6 on: February 27, 2021 at 8:20 pm

Javier: There are some aspects of Lr and DAM that I miss in Capture One, but not enough to go back. One note, though that with C112 to 21 (at least, don’t remember before that) hierarchical keywords are accepted. Keyword files are just text files, so I don’t know why Capture One won’t import hierarchical keywords from Lr. Must have something to do with reading the Lr catalogue. The biggest reason for me (and my friend) to have a catalogue converter is that Capture One won’t import virtual copies (variants in Capture One). Actually, C1 will import them, and it will show you them in the browser, but it won’t do anything with them and won’t even display them in the viewer. Again, my coding days were a long time ago. I can see why Capture one might not to waste the time and resources on dealing with someone else’s software, but I still think there’s a market for it. Avalanche looks like a step in that direction, but Capture One isn’t (yet) supported and so far it’s Mac only.

    Mike.

One challenge for me with Kevin’s method of sessions/catalogues is that I work a lot with keywords and sessions and catalogues have different keyword libraries. I could do culling, etc. in a session, but I’d have to do the keywording after importing to the catalogue (or spend a lot of time re-typing keywords into sessions).

Great light. It’s amazing to think about how old some of those are. Having said that, I’ve seen 150+ year-old cedar trees you could wrap your fingers around. And the saguaros provide the basis for so much other life… birds, bats and a lot more.
