Canon 5Ds – anyone still shooting with it?
    on: October 4, 2020 at 6:13 pm

I’m still using mine, and have been for coming up to five years now. It’s a fine camera for landscape, with excellent resolution. Its low light capabilities are limited and I found its deficiencies for wildlife cruelly exposed in Japan last year: the autofocus just couldn’t keep up. It’s for that reason (and Kevin’s nagging at me – hi Kevin!) that I’ll be changing to a Sony system soon, probably in the New Year.

Play away, David. I’m very seldom possessive about any of my photos and I’ll be interested to see your take on this one.

Was it something like this you had in mind, David?

It’s not a bad idea, David. I’ll have another play with it.

Frank, if it accords with your memories and you’re happy, there’s not much to be said. For me, the sky now looks a bit underdone. My only qualm about #2 was the blackness of the clouds: the colours seemed quite glorious.

Excellent. I’m not sure colour adds anything much, though: have you tried a monochrome conversion?

Thanks, all. Serendipity: accidental underexposure because I forgot to reset compensation, much exaggerated.

My main concern was a vague memory that previous system upgrades had interfered with colour management when printing.

Ah, Kevin, I’m just getting old and timid. In my youth, I’d have had the beta installed 18 months ago.

Some nice photos there, Steve. Maybe I should pay it a visit!

Hope all is (reasonably) well with you.

I love it, Rand. I’d like to see a larger version. My first thoughts are that the river in the foreground, which is pretty mist-free, detracts from the gloom and foggy nature of the rest, and I think the image would be better without it.

    Just a thought.

The first is an attractive imitation of a lake reflection, but it doesn’t particularly grab my attention. The second, though, is a wonderfully disconcerting abstract.
