in reply to: HELP WITH LIGHTROOM CLASSIC PRINTING WORKFLOW #51210HELP WITH LIGHTROOM CLASSIC PRINTING WORKFLOWon: March 31, 2022 at 7:20 pm
LIGHTROOM CLASSIC PRINTING WORKFLOW ADVISE NEEDED…..
LIKE MANY PHOTOGRAPHERS I PROCESS MY RAW FILES IN LIGHTROOM DEVELOP MODUAL BUT I STILL FIND MYSELF MOVING TO PHOTOSHOP FOR FINAL TOUCHES… USING LAYERS FOR .COLOR ADJUSTMENTS , BURNING AND DODGING. LOCAL ADJUSTMENTS , CLONING ETC…
WHEN COMPLETE IN PHOTOSHOP I CONSIDER THIS THE “MASTER FILE” AND I MOVE BACK TO LIGHTROOM FOR PRINTING..
THIS IS THE AREA WHERE I NEED ADVICE…
I OPEN THE MASTER FILE IN THE DEVELOP MODUAL AND INITIATE SOFTPROOFING….
I MAKE A VIRTUAL SOFTPROOF COPY OF THE MASTER FILE AND TRY TO MAKE MY SOFTPROOFING ADJUSTMENTS FOR THE PAPER I’M USING… WHILE COMPARING THE SOFTPROOF AGAINST THE MASTER FILE.
THEN I PRINT…
NOW IF THE PRINT WERE PERFECT AT THIS POINT … NO PROBLEM… BUT GENERALLY I FIND SOMETHING TO FIX…. BE IT COLOR… OR CLONING SOMETHING I MISSED .. BURNING AND DODGING….. ETC..
I ALWAYS FEEL I SHOULD MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT TO THE MASTER FILE SO I MOVE BACK TO PHOTOSHOP WHERE I HAVE ACCESS TO THE ORIGINAL LAYERS ETC…..MAKE MY CHANGES AND THEN BACK TO LIGHTROOM FOR PRINTING…
SOMETIMES IT LOOKS LIKE THE 1ST VIRTUAL SOFTPROOF AUTOMATICALLY UPDATES BUT I SWEAR SOMETIMES IT DOES NOT…… ARE THE VIRTUAL COPIES OF THE MASTER SUPPOSE TO AUTO UPDATE TO CHANGES MADE IN PHOTOSHOP?
IT GETS SOME WHAT CONFUSING HERE AS WELL BECAUSE A LOT OF LIGHTROOM WARNINGS ABOUT FILE CHANGED IN OUTSIDE APPLICATION SHOULD YOU OVERWRITE..ETC START TO APPEAR. I ASSUME THE FILE SHOULD BE OVERWRITTEN?
SHOULD I JUST FORGET AND DELETE THE ORIGINAL SOFTPROOF COPY AND START AGAIN?
IF I TRY A FEW DIFFERENT PAPERS I END UP WITH A FEW DIFFERENT VIRTUAL SOFTPROOF COPIES AND THINGS START TO LOOK MESSY…
HOW DO OTHERS KEEP TRACK OF MASTER AND ASSOCIATED SOFTPROOF COPIES AND KEEP THINGS NEET?
BOTTOM LINE……
I’M CURIOUS HOW THE EXPERT PRINTERS IN THIS FORUM WHO USE LIGHTROOM CLASSIC AND PHOTOSHOP MANAGE THIER WORKFLOW WHEN PRINTING FROM LIGHTROOM…
THANKS AND CHEERS

I ended up pulling the glass and they look great… and positive reactions from outsiders as well..plus I was lucky to have a frame shop who actually refunded me for return of the glass!..
Now to find if the paper will hold up over time?..
Thanks for you input…

You have strengthened my thought of just pulling out the glass…
My prints are on Canson Platine Fibre Rag and though you are referencing different paper…. I can’t see a real down side in my case. Unless UV causes real issues quickly.
I can always reprint if needed
Elliot thanks for your input.
I know may photographers do spray prints with protective coatings but I have never been successful with any kind of spray can in my hands…I alway end up with a splotch here or there….

in reply to: Displaying Prints #48522Re: Displaying PrintsReply #3 on: January 24, 2022 at 8:29 pmWhile we’re on the topic of displaying prints….
I just had five 17×22 prints matted …. and had aluminum frames cut to size along with glass by a frame shop that I then assembled.
My dilemma is the glass…..
I checked out the museum quality glass at the framers shop and it was out standing… you could hardly tell there was glass at all… but in my case that would have been $80.00 per frame for just the glass. To save a buck I went for $30.00 per frame glass called conservation clear… it was UV etc… BUT IT WAS NOT NON-REFLECTIVE….Ha…My home has lots of windows… and after hanging the prints I can barely see them during the day due to reflections…They look pretty good at night though…lol…. Seems you get what you pay for…
I have to do something but I thought I’d quiz the experts here about various options…. Is there alternatives to Museum Glass that are good but cheaper… Do any of you folks use Plexiglas ? I’m also considering just removing the glass period…
I’m curious as to various methods most photographers use to hang and protect the print in the frame?…
Thanks and Cheers

Again thanks…. I’m with you….
But I feel just a little guilty…
I don’t want to demean the whole of Mr Dewolfe”s book….based on a few short quotes I choose from one chapter on a large topic…. (By the way I had to type those … not copy and paste…lol)
I was only trying to get across my area of interest in the “Perceptool” .
You have to decide for yourselves but I think overall the book provides a lot of knowledgeable information towards the end goal of printing Black & White.
Cheers,
George

The lengthy discussion I was referring to was in Mr Dewolfe”s book “B&W Printing”
I’ll include a couple quotes from the book as an example of what he was discussing.
Quote 1
“I invented the Perceptool to solve many of the problems mentioned in this chapter. Basically, the tool works with the luminance image we get from the camera and corrects it to look like the luminosity percept produced by the visual cortex of the brain”
Quote 2 referring to the Perceptool
“In the action and software, one click changes the luminance image into the luminosity percept of the visual cortex.”
Quote 3
“The visual cortex finds the edges in the luminance image and separates those edges into two categories: reflected edges and illuminated edges. (Remember that luminance is a combination of the surface reflective nature of the scene being photographed as the illumination falling on that scene.)”
Hope that gives you an idea of the discussion… ha.. Like I said it was lengthy.
Again thanks for your time…
Cheers

in reply to: George DeWolfe & Perceptool #45687Re: George DeWolfe & PerceptoolReply #7 on: November 18, 2021 at 8:49 pmHi Folks
Sorry, I did not realize anyone was responding…. Seems I must not have set my email notification properly…
I do use both Lightroom and SFX for Black & White conversions..
I guess what peaked my interest in reference to the “Perceptool”.. was Mr Dewolfe’s lengthy discussion about the conversion from Luminance to Luminosity. It seems he invested years in developing this plugin and I was curious if I were missing something in my conversion process than might aid in enhancing my prints. I guess the fact that the “Perceptool” is not around anymore should tell me something?..heh…..
Andrew..Not totally sure what your were asking me…..I’m printing with the Epson P900 using the ABW mode…My last print had an ABW Vertical 3 Horizontal 3 setting which was perfect to my eye for said print on Canson Platine Fibre Rag…Sometimes I want to print toned but depends on the image…
Thanks all for your informative replies .. Appreciate your time.

in reply to: Epson SC P900 – how to print Gold Fibre Silk? #31083Re: Epson SC P900 – how to print Gold Fibre Silk?Reply #9 on: December 18, 2020 at 9:00 pmJust thought I might update Mark concerning my perceived issues with printing on Canson Platine Fibre Rag… with the P900…
I finally obtained a box of 8.5×11 Canson PFR… and a few sheets of Epson Legacy Platine..Using a Bill Atkinson Test File…. I made a few prints today on both papers… using both the Epson Legacy Platine Profile and the Canson Platine Fibre Rag Profile for P900-700
Let me state up front that I am not and Expert of any kind!!!… but to me I favored the Epson Legacy Profile on both papers using Relative Intent. They really seem to be so close that its hard to tell differences….I’ll have to stare at them again tomorrow and see if that decision holds..heh
Bottom line.. whatever the issue I was having was in my Master File not the Printer or Profile.
Cheers

I’m guilty… In my quest to become a Poor Man Master Printer I’ve been maybe to cautious trying to save the good paper. I see the light… waste a few sheets now and save in the long run… Thanks…
I’ve had my P900 a few weeks longer than you and like you my light grey cartridge was the first to go but what really surprised me was having to replace the $20.00 maintance cartridge already? I know you’ve run a lot more paper than I .. Did you have to replace yours as well?
Any idea why so soon?…

in reply to: Mark Segal’s Review of P900 has Been Posted #30668Re: Mark Segal’s Review of P900 has Been PostedReply #11 on: December 10, 2020 at 8:04 pmHi Mark
Along with many others I congratulate you on your super human effort producing the detailed review of the P900 …. WoW!.. I will be keeping that as a PDF alongside Epson’s Manual
If I may I have a quick question… regarding Epson print driver when setting up to print on Canson Platine Fibre Rag..or any third party Platine paper…
Most manufactures recommend driver media setting to be “Epson Premium Luster”….. but now that the Epson driver actually contains a listing for “Legacy Platine”… can I assume thats its safe to use that one in place of “Premium Luster”? Do they both do the same thing or not?
Cheers
George
