    New series Epson Printers!

Wayne thank you for your thoughts on the clogging. What frustrated me was running a nozzle check, than doing a print and half way through the print a clog. Not only was I wasting ink, but paper as well. I have owned all three brands currently using a canon ipf8400. The HP seemed to have the best tech for keeping the heads clean. There is no perfect solution, all three brands have issues. I am curious to hear what Kevin has learned from Epson re: clogging. Hopefully, he will comment.

As an amateur I’m happy with my 4880 (17 in.) Can we expect a 17-in-version in the future range?

The P800 has been out there for a while and it works great for a 17-inch printer.  Not sure if there will be an upgrade for the P800.

I suspect a LOT of “serious” amateurs would be interested in a 17″ version of these printers. I’m currently using a 3880 and will do so until it dies, essentially no clogs, lovely prints. Were it to die tomorrow I’d get a P800 in an instant. (I hope I haven’t tempted the printer gods). But, I’d pay a fair amount for a low clogging, instant ink switching 17″ printer. For some reason, ink switching and the concurrent waste of ink makes me nuts, out of proportion to the actual cost, and has since I got my first Epson. I’d possibly be a Canon user were it not for the fact that I really like to use Quadtone RIP for my black and white images. Since these printers are all new, it’s not at all clear if Roy Harrington will be willing/able to do whatever computer magic he does to make QTR work on the new machines with more and new inks.

I just can’t imagine how they could fit this head into a printer the size of the p5000. I haven’t seen the head on these but it has to be nearly as large as the one in the 10000/2000, which is huge,  and have two additional color channels  compared to the 5000 (that 4 additional sets or nozzles in this head because each color has two offsetting rows of nozzles).

But I’ve been wrong before.  I didn’t see these coming …

I don’t know if the article comes directly from an Epson press release but the following statement is arguable

“According to Henry Wilhelm, director of research at Wilhelm Imaging Research, the world’s leading independent print permanence testing laboratory,”

A lot of us who have studied print permanence trust the Aardenburg research much more than Wilhelm.

So, just wanted to add my journey to this discussion.

I was an very loyal Epson follower, having had an Epson 17″ printer for many years, including their 4800 & for the last 6 years at least their 4900.

Just sold my 4900 about a month ago as I could NOT clear 2 channels due to clogging, and finally found a gentleman who took it off my hands as he wanted the inks and the spare parts. I was really happy that he took it, and when it left my house, I made a promise that I would never have another Epson again.

I started looking at 24″ printers, and have looked at Canon, their P2000, and have had the company in Toronto where I live make arrangements with Canon to use their printer lab to print a few of my pics on 3 separate occasions.

I also have a friend who is in another class than me when it comes to printing, who had an Epson 44″ printer, had clogging troubles, and ended up being one of the first people to purchase a 44″ printer from HP, their new Z9 series. He had a few challenges with it in the beginning, and after much help from HP and their pros from their printing division, is in love with it and recommends it to me very highly. I am looking at the new HP Z9 series 24″ and am pleased, but am still a little worried that the colour gamet can not be the same with 9 colours as the Canon can be with 11, but have printed a few of my pics that I printed on the Canon P2000 on the HP Z9 and was also pleased!

I have been trying to decide which one I should get, and at this time favour Canon only due to the fact the they are offering a rebate at this time (I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada), and it does seem that Canon is not as aggressive in pricing and incentives as they are down in the U.S., while HP is not offering any rebates for their Z9 24″, although they are for their 44″.

I really am waiting for a photo show that takes place mid November in Toronto put on by a local photo shop (they have several stores across Canada), which I have attended the past few years and where they do offer some incentives to buy during the 2 days of the show.

I have continued to stick to my promise of not even look at an Epson but when I saw the announcement of these new printers from Epson, I did look at their promo material that we all saw on the internet, and was impressed, like many of us here.

    I. too, can not wait to see what these printers will do, read as much as possible from my learned colleagues like many of you, and put my money down soon so I can have a printer in my home to start printing pictures again! Right now I went out and got a Canon Pro-100, can only print to a maximum size of 13″ x 19″, but at least I do continue to at least print until I get a “father” to my “baby” printer.

Look forward to reading as much as I can in the next few months, and then making a decision soon! Who knows, maybe I will go back to Epson! Only time will tell!

Thanx for reading, and look forward to my help from many of you out there.

<p>I currently use a 9890 and P800.  I find the output of both printers quite beautiful.  The 9890 certainly has some clogging issues and I always do a nozzle check before printing.  Not sure that the additional color inks will add much to my work.  While most of my work is B&W I do print in color and have never been disappointed.  I’ll be curious to hear if Kevin sees any change in B&W prints compared to the 9890 and P800 and their older ink sets.</p>

I just received shipping notice for my Epson SC P 7570 printer.  5-7 days.  Wish me luck in setting up this beast!  LOL  It’s my first larger-than-17”-printer.  My little print studio has been reconfigured to accommodate its footprint.  If there’s interest, I’ll photo document the setup and post observations on how it goes setting it up, and initial impressions of print quality, features, etc.

My SC P 7570 arrived today.  Set up was straightforward.

Testing now.  So far so good.  Getting dialed in.  Printer test images look “as they should” on my 4700 k illuminated magnetic wall.  For now using Epson Legacy Baryta and Platine and Epson’s OEM ICC profiles that are in the driver.  Crappy iPhone photos w/ terrible color balance, etc. – sorry.  But will give an idea of the general set-up.

    More later if there’s interest.

Very nice setup, Rand! Did the printer arrive fully crated, or just strapped down onto a pallet? How did you get it from the truck to where you set it up?

Does that printer have a separate MK head, or do you still have to switch blacks depending on paper type?

BTW, your 16-35 lens is still going strong, but on an A7R3 now…
