Thank you for accepting me to the group. I have a old Intel I-3 3220 @3.3 ghz,8gb ram, nvidia GeForce 210 card, 120 gb ssd, 500 gb hd. Im using a Fuji X-T2 and getting into focus stacking more (but not my main objective) so the old machine just isn’t holding up anymore. Id like to be around $1500-$2000 cdn dollars if possible. Suggestions on cpu and ram configuration and a card. I got 7 years out of my I-3 but need more umph.

    Thanks for the help.

What is the best monitor you envision having during the lifetime of this system? Then research what GPUs will drive it – for photos, not gaming.

You can use Task Manager in Windows (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to see the load on your current RAM and CPU while you run your typical suite of programs.

Great to see you here, Tim! Don’t forget to post some images… 😉

There are a lot of people here with a lot of knowledge, so I’m sure you’ll get some good suggestions.

Have had good luck buying Gaming Computers that come without all the bloatware. Fast response and plenty of RAM works well for photoshop and image editing. Cost is reasonable and they seem to last a long time. One I just replaced is now  11 years old. It was time.

Build your own, it’s not hard. I just put together a nice spec computer for about $1400 US (without monitor), that included motherboard, power supply, 32 gig ram, 3 gb video card, 500 gig M.2 SSD, CPU, BeQuiet case, and CPU cooler.  No bloatware. You will need a Windows OS license. Bought most of it through B&H.

Thanks, Fred. Unfortunately Puget Systems doesn’t ship to Canada, but the advice is sound.

I had to replace my computer just a few weeks ago.  I suspect I over bought but the computer flies though tasks so no regrets.  I purchased the parts from Canada computers and assembled it myself.  The cost would be about $1800 CDN.  The cost cold be reduced somewhat (~$200-$350) with a different CPU, graphics card, HDD selection and Windows Home.  I think it would impact performance minimally.  My choices were driven by need, timing and availability.

    Parts list if it helps:
CPU: Intel Core i5-10600K 4.1 GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus PRIME H470M-PLUS/CSM Micro ATX LGA1200 Motherboard
    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Storage: Western Digital Blue SN550 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate BarraCuda 1 TB 3.5″ 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Storage: Seagate Barracuda Compute 2 TB 3.5″ 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER 6 GB SC Video Card
Case: be quiet! Pure Base 600 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic FOCUS Gold 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular
Optical Drive: LG WH16NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit
