    Thanks to Verizon Fios, I had to create a new Lightroom Catalog. During which it occurred to me that from the beginning of Lightroom and I think Photoshop, the Names “Catalog” and “Library ” are reversed.  Back while still in school, I would go to the “Library” in order to locate a book in the “Catolog”. Lightroom creates a Catalog the contains a Library???

    Maybe just elder thinking.;>)

    Simplistically I thought you were right (and I used the town and school libraries all the time).  However, rather interestingly Wikipedia has this to say;

    library catalog (or library catalogue in British English) is a register of all bibliographic items found in a library or group of libraries, such as a network of libraries at several locations. A catalog for a group of libraries is also called a union catalog.”

    A library has the books (or in Lightroom’s case the photos).  A catalogue tells you what’s in the library.

    Lightroom has a number of catalog files. The .lrcat-data is the catalog.

    There is a module called “Library“. As there are other modules (Maps, Develop) and the necessary data you create and use are again, stored in the catalog (.lrcat-data). Previews are separated into other documents(Smart Previews.lrdata,Previews.lrdata.)

    I think that most of us have got used to the Mac OS Finder naming of the Catalog file (.lrcat) and the fact that there is a Library module.

    But even within the Mac OS Finder there is some ambiguity in that file naming since the LR Catalog file is also identified by Kind as “Adobe Lightroom Library”

    LR-Cat-or-LIbrary

    But this is really a discussion of angels & pins ))

    On this end, the name is totally what I’ve created when I make/save the catalog. None of mine have the name “Catalog“. The Finder didn’t do any naming, but I did when I made the catalog within LR.
