    Filter Failed issue
    on: October 28, 2020 at 7:11 am

Yeah, would be better to merge the other thread to this one, this is what the article refers to.

I looked at your log and I have to say I can’t spot any clear reason what happens.  The logs cover a period of around 20 minutes.  I’m not sure how quickly you took the log after the failure or at what time it happened.  I do notice that you don’t have default printer set and that gives an error, so you can try setting that, but I doubt it makes a difference.  Does reboot fix the problem (temporarily)?  I also noticed that there was authorization failure with ipp://localhost/printers/EPSON_SC_P5000_Series, but I think subsequently it succeeded (as admin).  There’s also 126 old jobs cached (but not active at the moment).  I also see that the last printing job 126 got canceled but I can’t spot any clear reason why (unless you canceled it).

Here’s another magic command to enable web interface for CUPS:

    – Launch Terminal
    – Give the command: sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes

It will ask for you password so give it.  After that you should have access to the CUPS admin web interface where you can see (and manage) all your printers, jobs, logs, etc.  Maybe you can spot something unexpected there about your configuration or be able to reset things.  So after doing the above, open your web browser and go to: http://localhost:631/admin

Thanks very much for looking at that Pekka, much appreciated. I took the log immediately after the first failure I experienced on the laptop. I shall set the default printer. Reboot does not solve the problem even temporarily. I did that several times. I probably canceled the last print job by going into the print queue and deleting that job because it had failed and I wanted to “clear the decks” for the next attempt. I could try what you suggest in Terminal but I’m not sure I’d know how to spot what is unexpected or how to reset it – I’ve never had to get into any of this.

    Hi Mark,

I also saw that there appear to be 126 cached jobs according to your log file. Can you open a terminal window and type:

    lpstat -t

and post what it returns? Perhaps one of those 126 jobs has an issue and prevents newer jobs from running.

Can you also check how much disk space you have available on your machine? You can also do this from the command line using:

    df -h

    Thanks,

    Martin

My system is on HD3, which I suppose is what the first lines refer to. It looks as if I’m way up there on capacity utilization. Could that be the issue?

I should add Martin, the attempts it shows for this morning all failed. One showed filter fail and the other ones showed “ready to print” but didn’t do anything. No printing.

    Hi Mark,

Your disk is getting fairly full although 138GB should be enough unless the system is reserving some space for itself. It might not hurt to free up some space if you can.

As far as the print jobs go, it looks like it claims to be printing job 232 which is coming from user ‘anonymous’, whereas your other job has your name on it.

You could try cancelling those jobs from the command line:

    sudo cancel -a

It should ask you for your password. You might need to restart the print scheduler, easiest is just to reboot. Then try a print job.

Hi Martin, thanks yes, the disk is getting kind of full and I should remove a bunch of stuff from it. I entered the cancel command and I shall reboot and retry. I’ll report back what happens.

Did you clear some disk space? What does lpstat -t say now?

No disc space cleared yet – that requires decisions! Hope it isn’t the issue, but if it were, would be an easy fix. I’ll get there later in the day. Just returned from flu shots. Anyhow, here is the new log: I put in bold what looks most relevant to me; not sure much useful there; your view?

I still recommend enabling the CUPS web admin interface. You can do all these things (like canceling jobs or stopping/starting printers) there with click of buttons rather than giving commands (although sometimes it’s necessary to go to command line to get things done).  Just browse around the admin interface, it’s not very complicated to use.  Go to the P5000 printer and check what you see there…

Does printing any type of document work?  PDF?  From the web admin interface you can print also test page.  You can also enable debugging from the web admin front page (if not enabled yet), which can give much information into the error logs…

I wonder if the PrinTao could have some effect here… Since reboot doesn’t help, it’s probably related to some cached data, or incompatibility with something installed.  I was hoping there was clearer indication in the error log…
