    Filter Failed issue
    on: October 26, 2020 at 12:10 pm

Guess I’m lucky, having used Epson’s on Macs since they introduced the 1200, never seen such an issue.

I’ve called this the Epson Enema and recommended this for years, nearly always is a winner and of course  install drivers (from ONLY Epson):

1.Delete all instances of Epson printers from System Preferences>Print & Fax.

2.Then go to /Library/Printers and toss the whole Epson folder.

3.Toss LFP Remote Panel (IF you are using this utility for your printer).

4.Then reinstall drivers from Epson and never Apple.

When you go back to Print & Fax to add the printer, on 10.X I had to wait almost a minute before the IP version of the printer showed up, whereas the Bonjour one shows up right away. Then add the IP instance of the printer. This is for printers on a network.

Then re-install LFP Remote Panel if you use it with this printer.

NOTE: IF you have more than one Epson printer, you need to install the driver in the order of their release! Older then newer or you run into issues (eg, install 4800 before you’d install 3880).

My experience with the Epson Enema is that for this problem it can be a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.

When is any software fix a permanent solution (unless you never update anything ever again)?

I’m talking about the failure of this solution within weeks of “fixing” it.

For myself and others, it works as long as it works and will work as long as nothing else on the Mac changes. YMMV.

But you just said you’ve never experienced this particular problem, so what you are suggesting may well work in the manner you explain for other problems you’ve experienced, but it’s not necessarily relevant experience to the subject at hand, as others besides me have learned to their chagrin. The really useful thing to know would be why this fix, when it works at all, can be only temporary in the particular case of this problem even when nothing else has changed (i.e. no system upgrades, no new software installs, etc.)

We don’t really know if this is temporary in all cases and nothing new has occurred on the OS or other applications. Why is it that we often need to delete Photoshop or LR preferences to fix issues, why is it I have to repeatedly log into THIS web site even when every time I do so, I click on the “Keep logged in” checkbox? I know how to fix it; log in again. There isn’t really a faster alternative.

Yes, it be useful to know the why’s, understand the source code neither Adobe, Apple or this site uses but more importantly is to know the fix. Temporary or otherwise.

Having one lock down any and every update or change in software would go a long way to making a temporary problem disappear. It simply isn’t viable for many, many users. Having all software products play nice with each other and have bug free software would go a long way to keeping us all from having to report the fixes; that’s not going to happen.

Andrew, this is a serious problem affecting a prime function of digital imaging that has affected many people printing from Mac computers for years and it is time to get it resolved. I posted this topic, inter alia, to elicit discussion that is informed from personal relevant experience or specific knowledge of the internal workings of the various systems and components thereof that may be involved. I appreciate you agree it would be useful to know why it’s happening. That’s the point of it here. Thank you.

Mark, any bug or issue that affects people’s use of software or hardware, they consider serious problems. It’s a bit less serious than Covid-19 and fortunately, there are known fixes.

Well, if you know the fix pray-tell, and it ain’t your Epson Enema. Others can also attest to that, because we’ve been there, done that to no avail. If it were so simple to fix it would be a non-issue but that’s not the common experience.  Some problems are trivial and others are serious. This one is serious because it prevents a core function from being implemented, so please stop trivializing it. I and others in the community who have actually experienced this particular problem are interested in constructive discussion that may lead to an understanding of what causes it and to push the developers for a solution.

I never said the Epson Enema fixes all issues every. It does fix many, often, for years.

For some, all problems are serious.

You will never find out what causes such issues unless:

    1. You are the developer with the source code.

    2. You are a pre-release tester and the developer tells you.

Cause isn’t important, fixes and resolutions to them are. Do you know who at Apple/Adobe/Epson to contact, are you perhaps a pre-release tester for any? Some here may be able to assist in that if you need it. Doing so has for some of us, been historically constructive.
