About a week ago I migrated to a Mac Studio with Monterey.

Though I had used USB for the main connection with the P900 on my old iMac (never never had an issue)  I switched to the Wifi method on the new computer.

For the last four or five days the connection has worked…. Today I tried to print and the computer could not find the printer…I keep getting communication error and Failed Filter Error.

I thought maybe something wrong with the Wifi connection so I went back to the USB method but I’m getting the same errors?…

I’ve re-booted the computer and printer… and tried the method of unplugging the printer for a min plus… So far nothing works…

I printed last night with no issues… have no clue what could change in a few hours…

Any ideas would be appreciated…. Meanwhile I’ll go back to google searches…

    Cheers,

    George

    George,

Mark Segal did an article about this a year or so ago.  See if this helps.

Thanks Kevin….. Man is that a depressing article….lol… I do hope my future printing does not include having to deal with that nightmare….

I did deleted and re-add the Epson driver (from Epson’s Site)… and the printer is now found by the computer but…the article indicates I may be dealing with this again soon?..

When I re-added the driver …. my print dialogue box in lightroom of course lost all of my presets and also has lost all the Epson Media Types… Legacy Platine….etc…

All I wanted to do is make a print and now 4 hours latter I’m still trouble shooting… Not sure how to get the media types back into play…or why they didn’t install with the driver in the first place.

    Thanks for your input….

    Cheers

    George

I think this is a different problem. The previous problem was solved with an Epson driver update well before Mac Studio and Monterey OS came into being.

I upgraded to a Mac Studio M1 Ultra with Monterey OS a short while ago. I also experienced problems sending data to two Epson printers which were connected by USB and had been working fine on the old computer. In my case the communication errors were solved by connecting the SC-P5000 to the new computer with a Cat 6 Ethernet cable (in fact providing faster data transmission than via USB 2) and sending data to the little ET-2760 office multi-function printer via WIFI using the Airprint driver (nothing more sophisticated than that needed for an office machine) and this solution works reliably as well. There is something amiss with USB2 between the printers and the Mac Studio/Monterey environment. I presume that Epson has been working on diagnosing and fixing this issue.

George – I recommend starting over again. Go into Apple>System Preferences>Printers&Scanners>Options and Supplies>and do a printing system RESET. This will completely wipe-out anything Epson on your computer, then download the latest driver combo package from the Epson website, re-install it, connect with Ethernet directly between the printer and the computer’s Ethernet port and see whether that helps.

    Update

I just used the epson media installer and it seems to have updated the media types on the computer…… I didn’t think about that at first because I thought it only updated the printer ….

    Thanks

While we keep hoping that printing is getting easier, there are times when we are faced with challenges.  Luckily I have been printing to various Epson printers (8550ET, P700, P900 and 9570) with good success.  My workflow is a bit different though as I print through Epson Print Layout or ImagePrint.  This means I need to make a master tiff file but that also works well in my workflow as I can easily modify and resave the file to different formats for social media or use on web pages, etc..  I always output to ProPhoto at 16 bit.  I do need to convert to m8 bit for jpeg output and color space to srgb for use on the web or social media.

Knock on wood I haven’t experienced the error we are discussing.

We will start the printing workshops this summer and I’ll announce dates as soon as I know my healing time from Rotator Cuff surgery that will take place towards the end of June.

Thank you Mark as always for your input and solutions.

I’ll be featuring about 30 prints, some fairly large panos, all printed in the Epson SC-P5000 using the new set-up.

Its so comforting to know someone else with a new computer and Monterey also had Epson printing issues… LOL

Thats the fun in getting new toys… weeks of trouble shooting.

I will do as you recommend. As always thank you for sharing your expertise.

Wish you all the best with your gallery show…

    Cheers,

    George

    Thank you George.

I hope you manage to restore connectivity. Do keep us informed – it helps grow data points about what works and doesn’t in what circumstances.

As for trouble-shooting the new toys, what to say, such a mixed bag. On the one hand, this computer is nothing short of amazing – speed and silence like we’ve never had before; but every time there is a major technological upgrade we run into what look like elementary operating issues particularly between inter-dependent services that clearly shouldn’t happen, and makes one wonder about the quality of cooperation and testing that goes on between these companies before the stuff is released into commercial circulation. This is not new. Maybe it’s all so complex that these problems are inevitable, so we should just be grateful when it all works!

I took Marks advice…. Though as usual when I do something it never comes easy….

I did the printing system reset.

I downloaded and  re-installed the latest Epson drivers

    I added the printer

I then attached the ethernet cable between the printer and Mac Studio… (I have the base modelMac  Studio with 2T)

For some reason I was unable to get the Studio and P900 to talk to one another via ethernet …I played with the system network pref for some time to no avail….

I left the Mac Studio and P900 connected via cable and did another system printing reset… This time when installing the drivers the Epson connect popped up and this allowed me to set up the ethernet connection. The only difference between my first attempt and second was already having the ethernet cable attached but who knows I may have done something wrong on the first attempt?

So the P900 is working again via the ethernet cable and that was the goal….. but..heh….. when I did that system printing reset it blew out my drivers for a Brother laser printer… and now I can’t get the Studio to recognize newly downloaded drivers for that printer…. but for now I don’t care…ha  I can print photos again and can find other ways to get to the office printer…

Gives me something to do when I’m not printing photos…

    Thanks & Cheers

    George

Good. At least you got the Epson working. This stuff can be mystery-meat, but yes, your second attempt did things in the correct sequence and that’s why it worked .

My bad – I should have mentioned that when you do a printing system reset, it does reset the whole printing system – not just the one printer if you happen to have more than one. But it is guaranteed to start you off fresh, which was necessary.
