It is no secret for anyone who knows me that I am a medium format fan. I spent thirteen years of my career working for Phase One—and I must say they were some of my best years. Phase One is a unique company that is often misunderstood by those who do not know the name or who are unaware of medium format photography.Phase One IQ4 151 MP Digital Back

There is a lot of talk about the new Fuji cameras with their 100mp sensors, but these are not medium format cameras. The sensors on those cameras are smaller than the Phase One format sensors. Fuji even mentions this in their marketing, calling their camera system “large format cameras.” Nevertheless, these cameras and all their megapixels make for quite the viewing experience.

There will be a lot of people that strut their stuff about image quality and today’s sensors, but I don’t know anyone who has seen a Phase One file that doesn’t recognize a difference. There is just something about opening up a Phase One file that sets it apart from all the others.

The Phase One Visit

Phase One IQ4 151 MP Digital Back

Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to have a visit from my friends at Phase One, Drew Altdoerffer, and Lau Norgaard. Drew is a Senior Product Manager and Lau Norgaard is the Chief Visionary Officer of Phase One. Drew and Lau spent three days with me as we tested and worked with the NEW IQ4 151MP camera. This was quite the treat and it resulted in a number of videos that we made during their visit. The first video is of Drew and I talking about and shooting with the new IQ4 151MP Digital back. This video will be followed up by subsequent videos featuring Drew and Lau discussing the technology behind the camera.

Then Drew and I dive deep into Capture One 12 and some of the powerful new features of this powerful and flexible RAW processing software. Finally, Drew, Lau and I discuss the future of photography. I hope you like this video series.

Photography is my passion and has been for 50 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of picture taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can, hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through photoPXL.com, this site, as well as Rockhopper Workshops, and other projects, as well as teaching as Artist In Residence at the Indianapolis Art Center.
